PREVALENCE, PATTERN, AND PREDICTORS OF PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME AND PREMENSTRUAL DYSPHORIC DISORDER AMONG COLLEGE GIRLS

Objective: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) occurs 7–14 days before the onset of menstruation and subsides with commencement menstrual flow, affects women during their reproductive age, is associated physical, psychological, behavioral changes. If mental symptoms predominate are very severe impairment, then patient classified as having premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) which may be viewed a subtype PMS. This can interfere lives affected, well interpersonal relationships. Methods: study was conducted at KMCT medical college from November 2021 to May 2022. An awareness program informative well-interacted for each batch students regarding various aspects this screening study. tool (PSST) used screen presence disturbing symptoms. They were asked write down ways that they deal these menacing in separate form. Institution ethics committee approval taken carry out PSST it developed by Steiner et al. Results: A total 318 all batches took part actively. On PSST, 44 qualified PMDD, 89 met criteria PMS, remaining 185 had no mild (Table 1). Among group, most common reported anger/irritability −66%, fatigue/lack energy −45%, difficulty concentrating −45%. In who 84% anger/irritability, 81% tearful/increased sensitivity, 75% anxiety/ tension followed depressed mood 73%. Conclusion: PMS PMDD prevalent among substantial proportion girls significant negative influence on academic performance, emotional well–being, behavior. The pattern symptomatology different between overall students. predictors education, heavy dysmenorrhea, family history knowledge health seeking behavior toward PMD quite low. Strategies should drawn implemented timely recognition management girls.
